Gardening Tip of the Month
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Climatic conditions: Virginia, USA; semi-tropical; zones 6 and 7.
JUNE .....it's here with summertime heat, humidity and
bunches of lazy days.
The tip for this month is MULCH!
Mulch is the best thing for the garden after the gardener.
Mulch will make the garden easy to handle and aesthetic.
It will prevent some evaporation and help control
weeds. It decomposes, giving back to the earth.
Mulch can be any material you wish from bark to nuts and bolts.
Family Outdoors -- Outdoor Dining - on the trail
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*June 7th is National Trails Day*
Hiking with your children is a wonderful way to explore and celebrate
the outdoor world. Whether you take a short day hike or an overnight
hike, you╒ll need to pack drink and food before leaving home.
(Don╒t do like J. P. who brings just water and relies on finding
dinner / snacks along the way--berries, roots, bugs, etc. Though it is
truly a light way to travel, sometimes his find-it-along-the-way
plan turns up less morsels than desired.)
Here are a few suggestions:
~ Always bring something to drink, preferably water.
~ Diluted juice is also good.
~ Drink frequently. Even if you are not thirsty,
drink a little every 30 or 40 minutes to replace
the fluids lost through perspiration.
~ Bring light weight foods that need little or no cooking.
~ Sandwiches and snack food will do nicely for a short
day hike.
~ Trail mixes of dried fruits and nuts are great snack
foods.
~ For longer hikes you can pack dry instant foods such as
soups, noodles, oatmeal and granola.
~ Other suggestions are dried meats (such as beef jerky)
and canned foods (ex: small sausages and fruit
cocktail). However, go easy on packing the canned
goods since they become weighty -- that's both coming
and going (leave no trace).
